Jury Finds Terror Suspect Who Grew Up In Brooklyn Guilty
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A U.S. citizen has been convicted of federal charges he plotted to provide support to overseas terrorists.
A Brooklyn jury reached the guilty verdict against Betim Kaziu after less than four hours of deliberations on Thursday.
Jurors had heard testimony from a friend of Kaziu who grew up with him in Brooklyn. He told them they traveled together to Cairo in 2009 with plans to try to join Muslim militants and take up arms against U.S. troops.
The friend had a change of heart and returned to the United States. Prosecutors said Kaziu eventually made his way to Kosovo, where he was captured before he could do any harm.
The defense had argued that there was no convincing evidence that Kaziu posed a threat.
