Judge Rules To Temporarily Halt New York City School Budget Cuts
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Manhattan judge has temporarily barred the city from cutting $260 million from the school budget while he decides whether state lawmakers had the right to withhold the money.
State Supreme Court Justice Manuel Mendez issued the temporary restraining order on Tuesday.
Parents had sued the state, saying the cuts would hurt the city's 1.1 million public school students.
The city lost the money after it failed to meet a Jan. 17 deadline for a new teacher evaluation plan.
The Department of Education was poised to begin freezing hiring and spending.
Last month, Mendez blocked the state from withholding the funds while the lawsuit was pending.
The parents also sued the city after it said it would implement the cuts to its own budget.
