Judge Dismisses New Jersey Student's Lawsuit Against Parents
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A judge has formally dismissed the lawsuit brought by a New Jersey honor student who wanted her parents to financially support her after she moved out of their home.
The dismissal order issued Tuesday by state Superior Court Judge Peter Bogaard comes nearly a week after Rachel Canning reunited with her family and moved back to their Lincoln Park home. That came without any promises of financial support or other consideration.
Bogaard had denied a request from Canning's attorney last week that sought a court-appointed guardian for the 18-year-old to be paid for by her parents.
Canning filed a lawsuit against her parents last month for living expenses and college money.
She had claimed her parents were verbally abusive and threw her out when she turned 18 for not following rules. She claimed her parents' motive in throwing her out was that she would not stop dating a boy they did not like.
But her parents had said their daughter left on her own, and didn't deserve her college fund because she drinks, stays out past her curfew, and is disrespectful.
