Judge Blocks Newark Police Layoffs
NEWARK, N.J. (CBS 2) – A superior court judge issued a 10-day delay in the layoffs of Newark police officers.
Approximately 167 officers were scheduled to be laid off on Friday, but the judge made the last-minute deal to save the jobs.
The court also reached a settlement to save firefighter jobs.
Some cops, meanwhile, were already prepared to lose their jobs and turned in their guns and badges.
"I feel horrible, don't have a weapon, I still have to live on these streets where I live. I'm not sure what to do," Officer Sherri Dillard said.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker said the layoffs were needed to close a big budget deficit.
The Newark Police Department issued a statement saying it remains steadfast in its commitment to protect and serve.
