Joe Namath Rips Jets' Front Office, Focus, Use Of Tebow
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Joe Namath is at it again.
The Jets great delivered another chapter in his ongoing criticism of Gang Green's front office on Wednesday, saying the team has "regressed with talent" over the past two to three years under general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
"I don't know who's picking the players we bring in. ... I'm disappointed in the talent we have, and I think you gotta start looking at who's doing the picking and why," Namath said in an SNY podcast.
"I don't want to hear about 'Can't find talent,'" he added. "How do the other teams around the league that are so consistent continually find talent?"
Namath said the "focus" of the Jets and owner Woody Johnson has changed from winning games to "winning headlines."
And yes, that includes the acquisition and handling of backup quarterback Tim Tebow.
"I think that the fans haven't been given a fair shake," said Namath. "I don't think they get a straight story, often enough, from the powers that be. I think it's kind of condescending talk a bunch of times, telling us how they're developing and who they're getting.
"I think it's been disrespectful. We can go right to the Tebow thing. I mean, come on. If you're bringing him in to play, where's he been? Are you bringing him in to make other people practice longer? Excuse me. Are you bringing him in, trying to get media headlines?"
Speaking of Tebow, last week head coach Rex Ryan hinted the Jets may expand the backup's role. He backtracked a bit Wednesday.
"It probably wasn't the smartest thing, me coming out with that statement," said Ryan.
So what's that mean for the 25-year-old? Tebow is averaging less than eight snaps per game, and some fans want to see that number swell.
Then again, others don't.
One thing we do know: Ryan isn't about to spill the beans.
"If we're going to use him more or we're going to use him the same -- or less -- if I think it's an advantage to this football team one way or another, I'm not going to share it," Ryan said. "That's kind of where I look at it now.
"Did we look at Tim (over the bye)? Did we look at each guy, how we're using our guys? We did."
