Joan Rivers Condo Building Saga Continues
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The legal wrangling continues between comedian and condo board president Joan Rivers and a former downstairs neighbor in her luxury Manhattan building.
Elizabeth Hazan, 41, on Wednesday was able to get into a $2 million two-bedroom unit she once occupied despite a judge's ruling the same day that she be denied access until she paid $200,000 in common charges.
The New York Daily News reported that Hazan, surrounded by journalists, convinced police to let her inside the East Side building.
"She's crazy, she's out of her mind, she's holding all of my belongings hostage in there," Hazan said, according to the Daily News. "I have 500 pairs of shoes in there."
Hazan signed ownership of the apartment to Real Estate Holdings Group in July. That company sued Rivers earlier this month for $15 million. The company contends Rivers and others ripped wires from the unit's cable box and squirted glue in its locks.
Rivers, a former late-night talk show host who now is best known for critiquing celebrities on red carpets, lives in the building's $30 million penthouse.
In a statement, Rivers called Hazan a deadbeat owner and said the building would endure the fiasco. The board is considering its legal options.
