Last Remaining 9/11 Artifacts At JFK Hangar Being Distributed
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The 80,000-square-foot hangar at John F. Kennedy International Airport, which houses World Trade Center artifacts from the 9/11 attacks, is almost empty.
The few items remaining will soon be given away.
Two 12-foot sections of rusted rail from the PATH tracks were loaded onto Tom and Elaine Howard's pick-up truck Monday.
They're bound for Hamburg, Iowa.
"We thought, what better place to have a little piece of the World Trade Center there in Hamburg for Heroes Park," Elaine Howard said. "9/11 I would say those people gave to their country, they're heroes."
"We're able to bring the story to the smallest community, to the largest organization," said the Port Authority's Amy Passiak, who has overseen the gifting of roughly 2,500 artifacts, including 1,900 pieces of steel.
There are now 9/11 artifacts in all 50 states, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.
The last of the remaining two dozen items should be gone in a month or two.
The hangar is set for demolition.
