Fans Look To The Fall As Giants And Jets Hit The Practice Field

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As you may have heard, football season has officially gotten underway.

The Jets and Giants were both on the practice field on Friday, and that means it won't be long before the complexion of Sunday afternoons changes.

As CBS2's Steve Overmyer reported, the clock has started on the countdown until the end of summer. Sundays will soon no longer be filled with sand and surf, but pigskin and turf.

"It's get prepared for game day early on, then watching the game the entire day, and talking smack the rest of the day as long as we win," one Giants fan said.

"Around the TV watching football, then on the phone checking fantasy football," a Jets fan added.

It's still only July and the football display was already front and center at Modell's in Times Square. Football has been the most popular sport in America for 30 straight years.

"All other sports are secondary, football is number one,"one fan said.

The infatuation with one's favorite team begins at camp, but doesn't end until after the new year. CBS2's Otis Livingston was at Jets camp and found that during football season some mothers earn a new title -- football widow.

"I have three boys and a husband that all love football. So by the end of the season I'm done with football, but right now I'm ready for it to start," one mother said.

According to a Harris Poll 2/3 of Americans watch football including 55 percent of American women, but non-football fans look forward to Sundays for a different reason.

"That means it's girl time. I can take some me time to get my nails done, and they can watch football. So we're all good," one fan said.

Football season doesn't mean the end of family time, it just moves from the dinner table to the tailgate.
