Jets Cornerback Darrelle Revis Cleared For Physical Activity, But Not Contact
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has been cleared for physical activity, but not for contact, head coach Rex Ryan said on Wednesday.
The four-time Pro Bowler will run and lift weights but will not practice on Wednesday after suffering a mild concussion in the Jets' 48-28 victory over the Bills in Week 1.
"He's cleared to resume physical activity, but he's out for practice today," Ryan said. "Obviously as the week goes on he will progress further and do more things, but obviously we will follow the NFL protocol and follow the trainers and doctors."
Ryan is uncertain about Revis' status for Sunday's matchup against the Steelers, but he's hopeful that the centerpiece of his defense will be on the field in Pittsburgh. Still, the coach is remaining cautious and will play it safe if need be.
"I'm not real sure (about Revis playing)," Ryan said. "The NFL protocol (says) there's stages you have to get to. He might be limited tomorrow for instance -- might be contact. I don't think he'll have live contact even if he gets better until much later in the week. You have to take care of your player No. 1, and that's the way it should be. Unless he's ready to go, you don't put him out there -- period."
And though Revis' absence would be a major blow for the Jets this week, Ryan remains optimistic about the long-term health of his superstar playmaker.
"He's in the meetings, he's engaged and everything else," Ryan said. "That was encouraging."
Before leaving the game in the fourth quarter on Sunday, the three-time All Pro recorded five tackles and had a first-quarter interception of Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Looking less and less likely that Revis will be on the field come Sunday. Sound off with your thoughts and comments in the section below...
