Petty Has Bruised Shoulder, Won't Be Placed On IR Before Cut-Down
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Jets backup quarterback Bryce Petty has been diagnosed with a bruised shoulder, the team announced Friday.
Petty was injured during Thursday night's preseason loss to the Philadelphia Eagles when he took a hard shot just after releasing a 44-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson. An MRI on Friday revealed no structural damage, coach Todd Bowles said.
The Jets are still waiting to see what Petty's expected recovery time will be. The Jets said he will not be placed on the injured reserve before Saturday's deadline to cut the roster down to 53, meaning he would be eligible to return after six games.

Petty's injury could solve New York's quarterback dilemma. Bowles said Friday that it was safe to assume Geno Smith had locked up the No. 2 QB job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. Rookie Christian Hackenberg is a second-round pick, so his spot should be secure. The Jets (1-3) have been considering keeping all four quarterbacks on the roster, which would be easier to do if Petty is on the I.R.
Bowles said the coaching staff and general manager Mike Maccagnan are scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Friday to discuss the roster.
