At The Start Of Saturday's Game, Derek Jeter Two Hits From 3,000
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Derek Jeter continues his quest for a 3,000th career hit.
Jeter was two hits short of the milestone at the start of Saturday's game against Tampa Bay before singling in his first at bat.
The New York Yankees star grounded a single through the hole into left field and smiled as he reached first base. The hit came against Tampa Bay All-Star David Price.
The 37-year-old Jeter is trying to become the 28th major leaguer to get 3,000 hits and the first to do it with the Yankees.
Jeter had been set to bat second Friday night against the Rays before the game was rained out.
Third baseman Alex Rodriguez and outfielder Nick Swisher were out of the Yankees' lineup. Rodriguez has a tear in his right knee and Swisher has a problem with his left quadriceps.
Friday night's game cancellation wiped the smiles off the faces of hundreds of fans waiting outside the gates at Yankees Stadium before the game was set to start.
But Dwayne Skeet from Jersey City says he's ready to stand in line at the ticket booth all weekend to see history unfold. "My weekend schedule is clear so I'll be here," said Skeet. "Come hell, rain or whatever, I'll be here."

Tony Esposito from Long Island says he think the Yankees captain will hopefully pull it off this weekend. "In this new stadium, I don't feel the ghosts here, the aura and mystic the Yankees are known for and maybe this will start it anew," said Esposito.
Friday's game will be made up on September 22. The rainout gives Jeter, with 2,998 career hits, just two games to reach the mark at Yankee Stadium before the break.
