Jersey Police Chief Advocating Tip System
DEMAREST, N.J. (WCBS 880) – Extra police monitored Northern Valley High School in Demarest this week after receiving a tip about a possible shooting.
An anonymous tip came through in a service called "We-Tip" and may have helped the school avert disaster, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reports.

Demarest Police Chief James Powderly said that over the past year each of the tips have been spot on.
"It's an amazing tool, actually. It empowers the community and the entire school community to get involved," Powderly said.
There are multiple methods involved, all designed to get the most valuable information.
"A person can call and speak with an operator or they can actually e-mail a tip, and there's a series of questions that are asked," Powderly said. "The questions are designed to ensure we weed out pranksters."
Powderly said the tips have mostly been about substance abuse, disorderly conduct or bullying. Tipsters can receive an award and Powderly is reaching out to other school districts to sign up.
