1 Killed, 2 Hurt In Early-Morning Crash In Jersey City
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A man was killed in a crash early Friday morning in Jersey City.
An SUV and taxi cab got into a collision around 4:30 a.m. on Kennedy Boulevard near Fairmount Avenue.
Video shows emergency crews attempting to rescue the 47-year-old male driver of the taxi after the crash. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
The two men in the SUV were taken to the medical center as well. A 35-year-old has since died and a 32-year-old is in critical condition.
All three of the victims are from Jersey City. Their identities have not yet been released.
Sidney Uderani told CBS2's Kiran Dhillon she woke up to the sirens.
"It was awful. It was clear that it was not just a crash, that it was a pretty devastating event," she said. "Cars were overturned. There was a lot of charred sort of vehicle remains."
"I've never seen anything like it in my life before. Never," said neighbor Marcia Adams.
Neighbors who live near the intersection say they're saddened by what happened.
"It's crazy," neighbor Junior Ramos said.
Area residents say the intersection is extremely dangerous, and they say this isn't the first time a fatal crash has happened there.
Safe City JC has been working with Hudson County, which has jurisdiction over the road, since a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle and killed in 2013.
It says while progress has been made, more work is needed.
"We'd like to see more street redesign. Either put in more physical barriers, narrowing the road down a little bit," Ya-Ying Liu, with Safe City JC, said.
But while some residents say they want the county to do more to make the intersection safer, others say drivers need to slow down.
"People being more aware ... it's not just a vehicle, it's also potentially a weapon," one man said.
"It's the people. It's not the lights or anything. It's the people, how they drive," Adams said.
CBS2 has been told a dog seen running from the scene of the crash may have been in one of the vehicles. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
