Jersey City Police Applauded For Response To Passenger's Mid-Flight Freak Out
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Jersey City Police Department confirms that two their officers helped quell a mid-flight freak out by an unruly passenger.
While on their way to a wedding celebration in Hawaii via Phoenix on US Airways Flight 20, a passenger allegedly began to strip, yell and shout that someone had a gun as passengers looked on in stunned disbelief.
While there may not have been U.S. Air Marshals aboard the plane, two Jersey City police officers were.
Officers Robert Taino, Jr. and Paul Fennell were able to tackle and restrain the man and got him under control with a pair of plastic handcuffs provided by the cabin crew.
The plane was met by FBI agents, Homeland Security officers and local law enforcement upon landing in Honolulu.
The Jersey City police department's chief released a statement saying "The actions of Police Officer's Paul Fennell and Robert Taino Jr should be commended."
"During a difficult situation they responded quickly and professionally to a potential threat on an airliner with disregard for their own safety. The Department as well as the City should be proud of these officers as their actions are a reflection of the dedication and hard work of the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department," the statement read.
