Jersey City, Hoboken PATH Service Restored
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- PATH trains are rolling again from Hoboken and Jersey City to New York.
Service resumed Wednesday morning between Hoboken and 33rd Street and Journal Square and 33rd Street after it was suspended Tuesday because of smoky conditions.
Rail service was initially disrupted after a fire broke out Sunday in a PATH tunnel in Manhattan and damaged the system's power supply.
"A preliminary review has determined a repair splice between replacement cable and older cable resulted in a smoky condition this morning in the same area as Sunday's problem, leading PATH officials to cut power and service as a matter of safety," the Port Authority said Tuesday in a news release.
The Port Authority said much of its cable wiring dates back decades and said it is trying to find a way to update miles of wiring.
But the repeated problems were frustrating for some commuters.
"You've got to fix the problem. How many times are you going to have to do this every week?" a man said. "It's insane."

Others, however, were relieved service was restored and were generally still complimentary.
"I've been here 20 years. I've never had a problem with PATH," one man told WCBS 880's Sean Adams. "This is the first time, so you can't get upset over it."
"This is the first time that it's affected me," another man said. "Besides that, it's been fine. It's always been on time. It was just yesterday."
The Port Authority said Tuesday that PATH crews would work through the night to restore service for the Wednesday morning rush.
