Jersey City Family Distraught After Son Killed In Cell Phone Robbery
JERSEY CITY, NJ(CBSNewYork) -- A Jersey City family is grieving their son tonight after he was shot and killed in an apparent cell phone robbery early Friday morning as his family was observing Ramadan.
Muhammad Choudry, 19, was killed outside of his home, one person is in custody.
"Something like this happened just because of a cellphone, that's outrageous," friend Saeed Mohammad told CBS 2's Christine Sloan.
Choudry was shot while chasing a suspect who had just stolen his brother's cell phone. The incident occurred at 3:30 a.m. outside of the family's Mallory Ave home where they had just finished cooking a Ramadan meal.
Now, the family must prepare to bury their son during Islam's holiest month.
"We came to this country for a decent living, coming from Pakistan we don't shoot because of a cell phone," Saeed said.
Choudry had just graduated from high school and was planning to attend college.
"It's very devastating. He was athletic, played cricket, he was attending college next semester," Saeed said.
On Friday night Prosecutors announced that Heru Amun' Tehu, 18, of Jersey City had been arrested and charged with murder and robbery in connection with the incident, he was being held on $250,000 bail.
