Jersey City Police Cracking Down On Illegal Guns
JERSEY CITY, NJ (WCBS 880) -- Jersey City police have been cracking down on illegal guns in the hopes of a safer summer with Operation Summer Shield.
An Uzi, an AK47 and a Tech Nine are among the guns rounded up with the 176 arrested in the operation over the past five months.
"We strike proactively before the summer hits to make this the safest summer," said police chief Thomas Comey. "We put in custody everyone from a drug dealer to people that were wanted in homicides."
Including a man he says, who was suspected in two recent violent rapes in Jersey City.

"This whole thing was addressed at violent crime," said Comey.
But Mayor Jerramiah Healy says arrests will not fix crime problems, touting summer community events.
"We're also going to launch our second gun amnesty buyback program," said Hall.
The mayor is hoping to kick-start the buyback program later this month or early July.
