Jerry Seinfeld Will Always Be A Mets Fan, Never An Owner
NEW YORK (WFAN) - Comedian Jerry Seinfeld has always been a loyal Mets fan. But when limited partnerships of the club went on sale last year, he had zero interest in buying a piece.
"There is no higher level to being a fan," Seinfeld told The New York Times in a phone interview on Monday. "It's not a better experience if you own the team."
Seinfeld, known to WFAN listeners as "Jerry From Queens," even had former Mets first baseman and current SNY analyst Keith Hernandez play a part in his famous sitcom.
Earlier this year, reliever Tim Byrdak named a chicken who hung around the Mets clubhouse "Little Jerry Seinfeld," referring to an episode of "Seinfeld" in 1996.
The Mets did however find another comedian to willing to buy a small piece of the team: Bill Maher, host of the HBO show "Real Time with Bill Maher." But Seinfeld could not be persuaded.
As he told the Times, "It's like the Empire State Building. If you like it, go there. You don't need to own it."
