Jerry Seinfeld To Appear Monthly At Beacon Theatre In 2016
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Beginning in January, fans of Jerry Seinfeld will be able to catch the legendary comedian once a month at the Beacon Theatre.
The Madison Square Garden Company announced Tuesday that Seinfeld will perform at the Upper Manhattan theater as part of a residency called "Jerry Seinfeld: The Homestand.''
The comedy legend said he was inspired by seeing the Piano Man perform in concert during his residency at Madison Square Garden, CBS2's Jill Nicolini reported.
"I bought Billy Joel's house about 15 years ago, and I thought well as long as I have his house, why don't I steal his whole career!" he joked.
Seinfeld said in a statement that the 2,800-seat Beacon has always been his favorite New York theater.
"Comedians live for certain houses that just feel 'alive' for some reason," said Seinfeld. "The Beacon is that place for me and I am so excited to make it my new home."
Seinfeld started out doing stand-up comedy and got his big break by appearing on "The Tonight Show" in 1981.
Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, he's now looking forward to performing just minutes away from his New York City home.
"I like New York audiences, they're just fun to play, they love comedy, they love someone who knows how they think and feel so that's the fun part of it to me," Seinfeld said.
Over at Tom's restaurant -- the backdrop of the cafe in the show "Seinfeld" -- New Yorkers were intrigued by the news.
"I think it's wonderful because he is so New York centric. I mean, he is a New Yorker. He lives in this neighborhood. Why not pick the Beacon?" said Leah Kozak, of Harlem. "I think it will be challenging to get tickets."
"I love his humor. I love his sensitivity. I think it's great, I'm looking forward to seeing him," said Marc Greenberg, of the Upper West Side.
Tickets for Seinfeld's first six shows go on sale online on Dec. 7, and at the Beacon box office on Dec. 8.
He will be performing Jan. 7, Feb. 18, March 2, April 14, May 5, and June 8. More dates are expected to be announced for the second half of the year.
But for now, Seinfeld will continue riding in his classic cars and filming his web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee."
