Yankees Place Infielder Jayson Nix On The 15-Day Disabled List
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Yankees have been getting healthier as of late, but they were hit with the injury bug again on Wednesday night.
Infielder Jayson Nix has fractured his left hand, the result of being hit by a pitch from Toronto's R.A. Dickey.
On Thursday, the Yankees placed Nix on the 15-day disabled list. Right-handed reliever Preston Claiborne was recalled from Triple-A Scranton.
Nix was hit by a pitch from the knuckleballer in the second inning Wednesday night. He went to first base and stayed for one pitch before leaving. Mark Reynolds entered the game as a pinch runner.
Nix has filled in nicely for the Yankees through a season beset by injuries. The Yankees are currently without captain and shortstop Derek Jeter. Now, New York's infield depth is dangerously thin without Jeter, Nix, Kevin Youkilis and Mark Teixeira. Nix was making his 32nd start this season at third base and has started 41 times at shortstop.
He hit a tying homer in the seventh and a walk-off single in the ninth Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader sweep.
Before the injury, Nix was batting .236 with three homers and 24 RBIs.
