Jaw-Dropping Holiday Light Displays Pop Up Across Tri-State Area
NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- Sun down and lights up!
A number of impressive holiday yard displays can be seen all across the region.
Home after home was decked out in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn on Friday night. The displays are so popular that tour buses crawl by every night on 11th to 13th Avenues between 83rd and 86th Streets.
"It's really cool to see...this right in front of my eyes," Christopher Marabello said.
On Staten Island, the spectacularly-decorated home of Joe DiMartino on Sharrotts Road in Charleston was also getting plenty of attention.
The labor of love was assembled in memory his of wife, Debra Ann, who was killed in the 9/11 attacks. The display also helps raise tens of thousands of dollars for a children's cancer unit at Staten Island University Hospital.
DiMartino also showed CBS 2's Dave Carlin his favorite display.
"My baby is what I call the carousel -- its got moving horses that completely turn around," he said.
In New Rochelle, a more manicured holiday home could be seen on Vaneck Drive. It manages to be both bright and cozy. The razzle and dazzle combines with a feeling both warm and inviting.
"Just to have this locally, it's a real treat for all Westchester residents," said Benita Afonso of Mount Vernon.
Of course, a holiday lights tour is never complete without the spectacle on Pelham Parkway North. The Bronx tradition, which started in 1973, is now known simply as the "Christmas House."
Putting the mannequins in motion, and stringing more lights than anyone would care to count are members of the Garabedian family, who are in the dress-making business.
"We make everything. We make all the figures, we make all the statues," Gary Garbedian said.
