Janko Tipsarevic Beats Juan Carlos Ferrero In U.S. Open
NEW YORK (AP) - Janko Tipsarevic reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal by beating Juan Carlos Ferrero at the U.S. Open on Monday.
The 20th-seeded Serb won 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-2 in three hours, 43 minutes. Tipsarevic didn't face a single break point in the last three sets.
The 27-year-old Tipsarevic has ascended to his best-ever ranking, having a career year like countryman Novak Djokovic. If the world's top-ranked player also wins Monday, it will be the first time in the Open era that two Serbian men make the quarterfinals of a major tournament.
Djokovic would be Tipsarevic's next opponent.
The 31-year-old Ferrero hasn't been back to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows since he was the runner-up in 2003. The 105th-ranked Spaniard won the 2003 French Open.
