J And Z Subway Service To Broad Street To Resume
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- J and Z service on Tuesday morning will once again begin serving the Fulton and Broad Street stations in Lower Manhattan, for the first time since Superstorm Sandy.
Since the storm in late October, J and Z trains have only operated between the Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer terminal in Queens and Chambers Street in Manhattan – two stops short of the Broad Street terminal.
During Sandy, hundreds of signal wires were damaged at the Lower Manhattan end of the J and Z lines, when a third-rail cable caught fire and melted the signal cables. Interlocking at Broad Street was knocked out, and the stations had to close.
Repairs at Broad and Fulton streets included splicing in new signal wires, and conducting engineering tests on all circuits and systems.
On Monday morning, R line service resumed between 34th Street and the Whitehall station in Lower Manhattan for the first time since Sandy. Until that point, that portion of the line was shut down because of extensive flood damage.
Service on the R between Brooklyn and Manhattan remained shut down as of Monday, but was expected to resume later this month, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Also remaining shut down since Sandy is the 1 line between Rector Street and South Ferry – which was also hit with severe flooding.
The A line also remains out of commission from the Howard Beach station to Broad Channel the Rockaways, which were among the hardest-hit areas of New York City. Much of the line on the Rockaways was completely demolished.
Free shuttle buses are in operation between Howard Beach and Mott Avenue, where the H line has been resurrected as a shuttle to take riders to Beach 90th Street in the Rockaways.
