Isabella, Jayden Most Popular Baby Names In NYC For Third Year In A Row

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Whoa, baby!

Isabella and Jayden have come out on top again.

The two were dubbed the most popular baby names in New York City for the third year in a row, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Wednesday.

A couple of celebrity kids may have helped make it so. Pop singer Britney Spears has a son named Jayden and Jaden Smith,  the 14-year-old son of movie stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, is now an actor in his own right.

While the lists are similar to the 2010 top 10, Aiden and Alexander supplanted Joseph and Joshua near the end of the boys' list, and Sofia edged out Sarah among girls. (The separately-listed Sophia is number 2; Jacob is in the No. 2 slot for boys.)

One mother said she named her son Jayden because she thought it was different.

Natalia Latanzio, who gave birth at Coney Island Hospital, always knew she'd name her daughter Isabella.

"Since I was a little girl I liked the name Isabella," Latanzio said. "I always thought when I had a daughter her name is going to be Isabella, so it happened."

Bloomberg said 123,029 babies were born in the city in 2011, down 1.4 percent from 2010.

"I am glad to see, from a personal basis, that Michael  - a fine name - moved up a couple of notches,'' the mayor quipped. It's now number 5, up from 7 in 2010.

Gaining ground on the girls' list is Emma, up from number 7 to 4.

"A baby born in New York City has a life expectancy 2.5 years longer than the national average, in no small part due to our bold public health initiatives," said Bloomberg. "This means we can expect to see many of the very popularly named Isabellas and Jaydens – like these two little ones with us today – more than 80 years from now."

It takes several months to compile the list of most popular names because many birth certificates are initially filed without names and are updated later.

Overall, the number of new New Yorkers declined about 1.4 percent last year from 2010.

Sophia and Jacob were the top baby names nationwide in 2011.
