Irvington Factory Destroyed In Overnight Fire
IRVINGTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Firefighters in Irvington, N.J. spent five hours overnight battling a factory fire.
An industrial building was fully engulfed when fire crews responded around midnight.
Part of the factory's roof collapsed and fire officials said the building is a total loss.
As of 8:30 a.m., fire crews were still on the scene because the building was smoldering and smoky.
The factory stored tiny plastic beads which are used to make plastic bags, CBS 2's Janelle Burrell reported.
Fire officials said the plastic beads were highly flammable, which contributed to the massive fire.
Crews worked to ensure none of the factory's propane tanks exploded which working to extinguish the blaze.
"We had flames 40, 50 feet in the air with a tanker in the back that we weren't sure what was in it at the time so we had to set that up. We went defensive, we had to go to multiple alarms, got departments, all the surrounding departments in the area to surround all four sides of the building," acting deputy fire chief Felix McNally told Burrell.
Nearby buildings located in the industrial area sustained smoke and water damage, but the fire was confined to the one factory.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
