No New Finds Tuesday In Search For Human Remains On L.I.
ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police came up empty again Tuesday in their search for more bodies and clues near the remote oceanfront area where the remains of 10 people have been discovered in recent months.
State police Capt. James Dewar said 50 officers from various departments -- using eight dogs and a helicopter -- found "nothing of significance" in the dense brush along a mile-long stretch of the Robert Moses Causeway on Long Island.
It was the second day of searches along roads that provide access to Ocean Parkway, the beach road where traces of 10 people have been found since December. On Monday, the roadside along the Wantagh State Parkway was searched.
Dewar said no new search was planned.
The investigation began as a hunt for missing New Jersey prostitute Shannan Gilbert, who was last seen a year ago. She has not been found, but the discoveries of other remains have raised fears of a serial killer. Four young women have been identified among the dead.
Dewar said staffers from a medical examiner's office were on hand to make sure any remains that were found were human.
"It's quite common to find animal bones," he said.
The causeway, which links the main part of Long Island to barrier islands on the Atlantic Ocean, was closed from about 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Dewar said.
