Internet Fuels Drop In Recycling On Long Island

STONY BROOK, NY (WCBS 880) - In the last ten years, the recycling rate has has gone from 29 percent to 24 percent on Long Island.

Krista Greene, a research assistant for Stony Brook University, says one of the reason could be the internet. People are recycling paper less because they're simply using less.

Greene said the economy also plays a part.

"In tough economic times people, people are buying less and that could lead to reduced recycling rates," says Greene.

Recycling rates were higher on the on the east end of Long Island.

"We need increased enforcement of recycling laws. Some towns are considering incentive programs where people will get things back. So, the more they recycle, they might get coupons. So, that also could help," says Greene.
