For three nights every year, owners close down the restaurant and cook for free for members of the community who have been hurt by the downturn in the economy.
"This is the third time we are doing it and we are opening the doors to anyone who has financial difficulties," says co-owner, Paulo Feteira. "The idea is to be a night out and to have everybody together in the same room coming from different parts of life. Be very social."
Feteira says it gives him joy and it's a way for him to give back to the community.
He says, "It's for everybody. You can have a nice house and two nice cars in the driveway you still have a hard time. We open up for anyone who wants to have a night out."
Union Restaurant & Bar Latino is located at 22-24 New Main Street, Haverstraw, NY 10927. Their phone number is 845-429-4354.
The "We Care" event began on Monday and runs through Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
