Federal Agent Shoots Immigration Suspect In Midtown Operation

NEW YORK (CBS 2) – A U.S. immigration officer opened fire on a suspect near the McDonald's at 34th and 10th on Friday night.

The officer, a member of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), was conducting a federal law enforcement operation with other federal agents when one of the suspects drove his vehicle in the direction of the officer, according to a statement by HSI's New York Special Agent James T. Hayes Jr.

The agent fired three shots at the vehicle, which fled the scene. Agents found the Chevy Tahoe with its windows blown out by bullets abandoned a few streets away at 38th Street and Ninth Avenue.

The violence shook up people in the neighborhood.

"Of course I'm nervous. It's like two feet away from my station. I'm scared. This usually doesn't happen around this neighborhood," witness Ashley Apollona said.

Hayes said one person was arrested, but they did not release the person's name.

He also said no one else was injured.
