ICE Director Answers Questions About Possible Deportation For Dharun Ravi
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Whether or not he spends his full sentence in the county lockup or handed a stiffer one on appeal for spying on his Rutgers roommate, Dharun Ravi's problems are far from over.
The 20-year-old was sentenced to 30 days in jail and ordered to do 300 hours of community service after using a webcam to watch his roommate, 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, have an intimate encounter with another man in September 2010.
He must also pay $10,000 towards a program to help victims of bias crimes and was told to enter into counseling.
Ravi also faces possible deportation back to India, where he was born and is still a citizen.

The judge sentencing him recommended that he not be deported, but ultimately that decision lies with Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton, 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported.
"We're not quite ready to make that determination yet, he needs to serve his sentence," Morton told WCBS 880's Levon Putney.
Morton told reporters that such decisions are evaluated on a case by case basis.
"There are certain crimes in federal law that are given special treatment -- typically murder...very violent crimes," he said.
The real question for the agency will be where does bias intimidation fall in the equation?

"We'll make a determination once he ends his sentence," Morton said.
Ravi is scheduled to report to the Middlesex County Corrections Facility at 9 a.m. on May 31.
