There are a number of large homes. Some residents even sit on rooftop patios enjoying the view.

But erosion has threatened these homes and now, something is being done about it.

A large vessel called a hydraulic marine dredge is in the water off of Point Lookout to combat erosion and foul odor.

Since the beach has eroded over the years, the dredge is pulling up the sand that is underneath the water and, using a long plastic pipe, the sand is placed back on the beach.

"We have so far replenished 5,000 cubic yards of sand. Ultimately, it will be 20,000 cubic yards of sand," says town of Hempstead supervisor Kate Murray. "Our number one priority, of course, is to make sure that our neighborhoods stay safe."
