With the pull of a trigger, two shots were fired from a gun and the Shot Spotter system was successfully tested in Huntington Station Thursday morning.
Shot Spotter is high tech surveillance equipment designed to detect gunfire and quickly get the time and location of the shots to police.
"Police officers are able to secure a crime scene faster and locate evidence and identify witnesses much more quickly," said Suffolk County legislator John Cooper.
"We need a deterrent to get these gang members and people that don't want to do the right thing in the community out of our neighborhoods," said Brazil Walters, who lives in this neighborhood where three men were recently wounded by gunfire.
Residents there are hoping Shot Spotter will make their communities safer.
The test was at a secure location and the gunshots were fired into a vehicle.
