Hunt Continues For Alleged Vandals Who Targeted Jackie Robinson Statue
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Police were still searching for the vandals who scrawled messages of hate on a Jackie Robinson statue at Coney Island.
As CBS 2's Dave Carlin reported Wednesday, permanent marker was used by someone to deface and offend.
A swastika, along with the phrases "Heil Hitler," "die n****r," "f**k n****r," and "f**k Jackie Robinson" were all scrawled on the statue, which depicts Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese in a famous pose from 1947, 1010 WINS reported.
"It was disgusting," volunteer Patrick Gabour told WCBS 880's Alex Silverman.
By Saturday the reward offered in the search for the slur scrawling suspects had reached $50,000, CBS 2 reported.
The parks department power-washed the messages away. Police are considering hate crime charges in the case.
