Power Outage Hits Hudson Valley Communities, Mall
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A power outage is darkening a stretch of the Hudson Valley, including a shopping mall on a holiday-season Saturday night.
Orange & Rockland Utilities spokesman Michael Donovan said it appears that some equipment malfunctioned in an electric transmission substation in Middletown around 7:30 p.m.
The utility tweeted that about 52,000 customers were without power. An online outage map shows homes and businesses without electricity in Middletown and nearby communities, some by the New Jersey and Pennsylvania borders.
The outage is affecting the Galleria at Crystal Run, a large mall in Middletown.
The Times-Herald-Record of Middletown said the mall was evacuated. A man who answered the mall security desk phone declined to comment.
The utility said power should be restored by midnight.
Meanwhile, one of two reactors at the Indian Point nuclear power plant about 45 miles away also was shut down Saturday because several control rods lost power.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the company reports no radiation was released into the environment. State Department of Public Service workers are headed to the plant in Buchanan.
Donovan said the events are unrelated.
