How Safe Is Nets' Head Coach Avery Johnson?
BROOKLYN (CBSNewYork) - Much was expected from Avery Johnson and his new-look Nets as the NBA season got underway.
Early on, the Nets matched expectations by keeping pace with the rival Knicks in the Atlantic Division race. The Nets began their season by winning their first three games, but have lost three in a row and now are only one game above the .500 mark at 13-12.
Brooklyn has fallen six games behind the first-place Knicks and their have consecutive divisional foes ahead in Philadelphia and Boston.
Johnson told the Daily News on Friday, "At some point, after I signed on as a coach, when I signed on the dotted line, a couple of things are going to happen at some point: 1. I'm going to get fired, 2. I'm going to resign. 3. I'm going to get re-assigned."
He continued, "At the end of the day for every coach, one of those three things are going to happen. So right now, what I'm really concerned about is us playing good basketball. So until ownership tells me otherwise I'm going to continue to do my job."
The Nets will face the 76ers in Brooklyn on Sunday and Johnson will be hoping to turn things around before the New Year begins. Johnson is in the final year of his contract.
