House Arrest For NJ Man In Attack On A Rangers Fan

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A New Jersey man accused of beating two New York Rangers fans in a brawl after the NHL Winter Classic in Philadelphia has been sentenced to house arrest.

A Philadelphia judge on Friday sentenced 33-year-old Glassboro, N.J., resident Dennis Veteri to 11½ to 23 months of house arrest followed by five years of probation.

Prosecutors asked for prison time. Veteri's lawyer says his client is "a good man who had a bad day."

The fight occurred outside a cheesesteak stand after the Jan. 2 game between the Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers.

One victim was an off-duty police officer from Woodbridge, N.J. He was beaten unconscious and suffered broken eye socket bones and lacerations.

The Winter Classic drew 47,000 fans to Citizens Bank Park. The Rangers beat the Flyers 3-2.
