1 Dead, 2 Injured After Police Pursuit Ends In Crash In Holtsville
HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A driver is facing multiple charges after leading police on a pursuit in Holtsville.
It started when an officer tried to pull the driver over and ended with the death of an innocent driver.
Police said Robert Hengeveld was driving a stolen pickup truck.
As CBS2's Jenna Deangelis reported, the crash happened at the intersection of North Ocean Avenue and Expressway Drive South.
A witness DeAngelis spoke to described the crash as horrific.
The scene has since been cleared, but a car was left crushed along the sidewalk and the driver, sadly, didn't make it.
Suffolk County police said it all started Tuesday night at around 11:30 p.m. when officers noticed the pickup truck with stolen license plates. They attempted to pull the driver over at Long Island Avenue and Gazebo Lane, but police said the driver sped off.
Police then followed with lights and sirens.
The pickup truck was going southbound on North Ocean when it crashed into a Honda Civic headed eastbound on Expressway Drive South.
The driver of the Civic, 19-year-old Starlin Diaz Felipe of Medford, was killed.
Hengeveld, 50, suffered minor injuries. A female passenger was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.
Hengeveld, of Blue Point, faces a host of charges, including reckless driving, possession of stolen property, fleeing police, and more.
