Hoboken Street Named Among Top 10 In USA
HOBOKEN, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- Washington Street in Hoboken, N.J. has been named one of 10 Great Streets for 2010 by the American Planning Association.
LISTEN: WCBS 880's Levon Putney reports
APA said it picked the street due to its affordable housing, history, views of the Hudson River and Manhattan's skyline.
Convenience seemed to be the main reason people who lived in the area loved the street.
"This is great not having to walk very far to get a sandwich. Go out at night, get a drink. Go out to dinner," one man told WCBS 880's Levon Putney.
"I find everything on this street that you could need," another woman said.
Many residents said parking was the only thing they thought could be improved.
The nine other streets receiving recognition were: Bank Street in Wallace, ID; Wydown Boulevard in Clayton, MO; Broadway Street in Red Lodge, MT; 5th Avenue in San Diego, CA; Middle Street in New Bern, NC; Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, KS; Washington Street in Middleburg, VA; Spring Street in Eureka Springs, AR; and Liberty Street in Franklin, PA.
Meanwhile, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer and Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise issued a State of Emergency Wednesday after a section of Sinatra Drive between 13th and 14th streets collapsed last Friday.
Zimmer said the move was made in order to ensure the safety and welfare of residents.
"We truly appreciate the county declaring a State of Emergency in order to expedite the full evaluation and complete repair of this road," Zimmer said.
