Newark Hit-And-Run Leaves 2 Women In Critical Condition

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- There were police cars, flashing lights and what looked like broken glass all over the road. This after a driver slammed into two female pedestrians early Sunday morning, sending them both to the hospital in critical condition.

The incident happened on Verona Avenue right near Broadway at around 2 a.m. Police said the driver was headed east toward Route 21. It's unclear where the driver went after that, CBS2's Marc Liverman reported.

"They were pulling out stretchers. There was about two ambulances, an EMS task force, a whole bunch of cops. It just looked crazy," neighbor Anthony Malena said.

Police said the driver didn't bother to stick around and check on the victims.

"Those two women to just leave them like that, it's just nuts. He didn't even get out and help these ladies. I hope they're OK," neighbor Tony Rosado said.

"This is terrible. People need to own up to their responsibility and hold their self accountable," Malena added.

Police spent hours looking for clues before sunrise, looking into nearby car windows with flashlights. It happened in an area that is relatively quiet during the day -- just a few houses and a couple businesses. However, one neighbor said it's a different story at night.

"This is busy at night. You have this restaurant here. You have the bar. You've got the nightclub over there," neighbor Jimmy Martinez said.

Which could mean more witnesses might come forward as police continue their investigation.

Police said the driver may have been driving either a white Honda CRV or a Toyota RAV 4.

Police urge anyone with information to contact the police Crime Stopper line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477) or 1-877-NWK-GUNS (1-877-695-4867), or online at www.newarkpd.org.
