Hit-And-Run Leaves Elderly Man Fighting For Life
NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver that struck an elderly man in the middle of the street Friday night.
Michael Ward, 85, is fighting for his life after the car hit him as he walked across First Ave. at 84th Street at 5 p.m. Friday evening.
"I heard a noise and went to look out the winow and I saw an old guy fall down to the floor," said witness Oswado Xique.
The suspect drove a gold Nissan maxima and continued to drive up First Ave after the accident.
"I'm not surprised," said witness Fredda Stimell. "Sometimes the lights aren't long enough for elderly people to walk across and some of the drivers are not very careful."
Police spent hours at the scene, working overnight collecting evidence and talking to witnesses. They went door to door checking video surveillance footage.
Ward's neighbors said he was a doorman in the city for more than three decades before he retired 7 years ago.
He lived alone, but his sister is coming in from Ireland to be at his side.
