The Zabriskie House is a 250-year-old cottage style home shaded by trees on Dunkerhook Road in Paramus.
It's a historic place "because it has freedom written all over it," says Passaic River Commission executive director Ella Filippone, who notes that freed slaves used to live there.
"For us to, in this day and age, demolish something like that is un-American," she says.
"I believe in keeping the traditions like it is, but the house is all rotten," says Lisa Lebumbarra, whose daughter lives across the street from the Zabriskie House and wants the property developed.
She suggests a plaque to mark the historic nature of the site.
The local planning board approved redevelopment plans to tear it down, so preservationists like Filippone have 45 days to find a buyer.
Filippone is looking for donors.
