12 Hurt When Car Hits Bus Carrying Senior Citizens In Hillside, N.J.
HILLSIDE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A dozen people were hurt when police say a car ran a stop sign and crashed into a bus carrying senior citizens Thursday in New Jersey.
The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Long and Central avenues in Hillside.
Police said the impact caused the bus driver to lose control and strike a utility pole.
The pole then fell onto the bus, where it remains due to live wires.
Police said 12 people were injured. Most of the injuries were described as minor, but the mayor said two were serious.
"The senior citizens have been well taken care of. All of them have been taken to our local hospitals for care. We did have two serious injuries," Hillside Mayor Dahlia Vertreese told CBS2's Meg Baker.
"We have an excellent bus driver. He was able to avoid hitting the transformer on the pole, because he was swerving out of the way as the back of his car was clipped," she continued. "The other driver, unfortunately, missed the stop sign - she didn't see it – and hit the back of the vehicle."
PSE&G said crews were able to cut the power and it's working to minimize the outage to only business in the large commercial area.
