Heyman: Marlins, Stanton Agree To Record 13-Year, $325 Million Extension
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- History is about to be made.
We heard about it on Friday, and now it appears to be even closer to being finalized. According to CBSSports.com and WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, slugger Giancarlo Stanton and the Miami Marlins have agreed to a 13-year, $325 million extension.
Heyman reported that the 25-year-old outfielder will have both an early opt-out clause and a no-trade provision in the contract. The two-time All-Star and 2014 National League home-run champion will have the opportunity to opt out shortly after he turns 30.
While the contract was still not official as of late Monday afternoon, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria spoke about the deal to Heyman.
This contract will break Miguel Cabrera's 10-year, $292 million commitment with the Tigers. Prior to that, Alex Rodriguez's 10-year, $275 million pact with the Yankees was the record for a contract's total value.
Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw still holds the record for average annual salary, making $30-plus million a season.
According to Heyman, a press conference to announce Stanton's deal will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Marlins Park.
The right fielder batted .288 with 37 homers, 105 RBIs and 31 doubles in 145 games for the Marlins in 2014. He also posted a .395 on-base percentage and a .555 slugging percentage.
