Herald Square Transformed For Annual Macy's Flower Show
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The annual Macy's Flower Show has sprung up in Herald Square.
The 39th annual show is bringing its usual blast of color to the famous department store. But for the second year in a row, the flower show is being held in a block-long tent on the Broadway plaza in Herald Square because of the ongoing renovations inside the flagship store.
Macy's Flower Show producer Robin Hall sat down with CBS 2's Kathryn Brown to discuss what to expect at this year's show. Hall said having the show in a tent has its ups and downs.
"Unlike inside the store, we can create a total atmosphere that's more of a stage set," Hall told CBS 2's Brown. "The down side of it is it's a much smaller show than in previous years, but it seems huge."
The show's theme this year is south Asia, so the displays are full of rich colors. Elephant sculptures adorned with flowers also fill the tent.
"It is one of the most beautiful settings I've ever seen," Hall said. "I think we have a pretty magnificent show for New Yorkers this year."
The Macy's Flower Show opened in five cities on Sunday. The tents are fully climate-controlled for the comfort of the visitors, but to also keep the flowers and plants thriving.
In the Washington, D.C. show, Hall said all of their cherry blossom trees have bloomed, while the city's trees have not yet blossomed.
The Macy's Flower Show runs until April 7.
