In one case, a woman put her property tax payment in the mail, but that mailbox was torn apart by the storm.
Town Supervisor Kate Murray told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall that other residents lost their financial documents in the storm.
That is why Murray said she is asking for the extension.
"I sent a letter to Gov. Cuomo asking him to extend the property tax deadline for the town of Hempstead and, of course, all of Nassau County," she said. "Currently, people have to pay their property taxes by November 13. We are asking the governor to extend it to December 31st."
Murray said her office has received hundreds of phone calls from worried residents they are going to be late on their payments because their homes were severely damaged or destroyed.
