Hempstead Takes Action Against Sign-Covered Utility Poles
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Residents were fed up with all the signs covering utility poles, fences, and trees in the town of Hempstead. So the town took action, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

Many of the signs have been placed in front of well-manicured homes.
Now the town of Hempstead has made it illegal for businesses to post the colorful signs.
"We want our businesses to flourish," Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray told Hall. "But instead of illegal putting the signs on utility poles, consult with your local chamber of commerce. They have great marketing strategies."
If you are caught posting a sign, your business could face a $250 fine for every sign posted.
But Murray had something important to add about the target of this law.
"If you lose your dog, you're going to put up a couple of signs. That's not who we're aiming at. We're not aiming at little yard sales," she said. "We're aiming at the businesses that put out literally hundreds, if not thousands, of these signs throughout the town of Hempstead."
