Hempstead Police Install Shot Spotter System To Catch Criminals
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - For one Long Island town, there's a new way of catching shooters.
In the village of Hempstead, Mayor Wayne Hall told WCBS reporter Sophia Hall that if people hear gunshots, because of fear, they will likely not come forward.
So, the village has a new way of catching those who fire weapons - the shot spotter system.

It lets police know exactly where a shot was fired and there are cameras to zoom in on the person.
"About a week or two ago, someone was just shooting up in the air and the detectors zoomed on him and also the camera, so it was the person shooting the gun," Mayor Hall said.
The shot spotter system was put in place in the village in the first week of February.
"Now we want to put more cameras up," the mayor said.
Huntington Station has been working with the system since 2011.
