Hempstead Officials Propose Giving Themselves Raises Of Up To $10,000
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The Hempstead Town Board has proposed pay increases for its members of up to $10,000.
The proposal would give some town officials a more than 8 percent pay hike. Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Receiver of Taxes Donald Clavin would each get a pay increase of $10,000 under the proposal, while other employees would see their salaries increase by $5,000.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, some Democrats are up in arms over the proposal, saying the increases should have been made public before the November election.

But town spokesman Michael Deery said the salary hikes are justified.
"It's America's largest township, it's a complex township, it's larger than four states and the raises are very modest," said Deery.
He added that town officials have not seen a pay hike in four years.
Deery's salary would go up $6,000 under the proposal.
A public hearing on the proposal will be held Dec. 10. Some would like to see the proposal put to a town-wide vote, Xirinachs reported.
