Hempstead Comes To The Rescue In Snowstorm

HEMPSTEAD, NY (WCBS 880) - For most of us trying to dig out, it's a nuisance. But, for others in the town of Hempstead on Long Island, it's a matter of life and death.

Town Supervisor Kate Murray told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall that they received an emergency call around 4 a.m. from a Levittown man who needed to go to the hospital for a dialysis treatment.

"Not only, of course, was there plenty of snow blocking his driveway, but a neighbor had actually parked in front of his driveway as well," Murray said. "So, we ran, got the neighbor and then we used not only a backhoe but plows as well."

Murray says the man was able to make his appointment, but then three hours later, a woman from Merrick called to say she needed help because she was in labor.

"We went to the woman's home in Merrick. We were able to get her out," said Murray.
