Heavyweight Title Contender Tomasz Adamek Charged With DWI In Lake Placid
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — IBF heavyweight title contender Tomasz Adamek has been charged with driving while intoxicated after police said he crashed his car into a parked vehicle in Lake Placid.
Village police told the Adirondack Daily Enterprise that the 36-year-old Jersey City, N.J., resident hit the unoccupied car while making a turn late Saturday night. Officials said Adamek was checked out at a local hospital but apparently didn't suffer any injuries.
Adamek was charged with DWI. He was arraigned in village court and released after posting $1,000 bail.
His lawyer, Brian Barrett, said the crash occurred at a "dangerous intersection" where other accidents have occurred, but he declined additional comment.
Adamek outpointed Steve Cunningham in a split decision in their IBF heavyweight title eliminator in Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 22. Adamek advanced to fight contender Kubrat Pulev, with the winner scheduled to take on IBF belt-holder Wladimir Klitschko.
Adamek is a former WBC Light Heavyweight Champion.
